USMT is a Windows program for migrating your OS installation to another computer. Similar to FastMove, there are instruments for transferring user accounts, files, settings and third party applications.
Description
This software is a part of the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit that is used for customizing and installing Windows on new machines. There are tools for cloning operating systems as well. Some experience with command line interfaces and scripting languages is necessary to interact with the utility.
Please note that USMT is obsolete and no longer supported by the developer. It is not compatible with 64 bit OS versions.
Migration instructions
There are two main components: ScanState and LoadState. The first tool is intended for analyzing the system hard drive on the source computer and identifying all existing user accounts, personal files and parameters you want to migrate. A logical volume with all collected information is created automatically upon finishing the scan.
The LoadState component lets users restore the data to the destination machine. It is possible to copy operating systems over the network or via an external hard drive.
